Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery 5.0.0.7 (On of the best data recovery for MAC OS)

Data loss is a common occurrence on Mac. There are a range of utilities today for recovering data from Mac. One of those tools is Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery v5. On reading a number of reviews about the utility, I decided to personally check the basic functionality by running some tests against the application. I wanted to go as simple as possible.

Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery provides you the familiar working environment of Mac OS X. The intuitive and user-friendly interface of the software wins against those of other products currently in the market. Further, the tool can be resized to make it easy to search data in a relatively long list of files displayed in the interface. The tool facilitates recovery from Mac hard drives, external drives, CD/DVDs, and iPods. ‘Drive Recovery’ module has four options ‘Quick Recovery’, ‘Deleted Recovery’, Formatted Media/Lost File Recovery’, and ‘Search Lost Deleted/Volumes’.

Basic Module Tests

Quick Recovery

Initially, I ran the test for ‘Quick Recovery’. Deleted some of the infrequently-used files on my 250 GB Mac hard drive and emptied the Trash bin. On running ‘Quick Recovery’, the option failed to show any of those permanently deleted files. I was able to recover them by running the advanced ‘Deleted File Recovery’ option. I saved the recovered files to a new partition at a desired location.

Formatted Media/Lost File Recovery

The second test was performed to check the program’s ability to recover formatted files. I had a USB flash drives containing some files. I formatted the drive and used ‘Formatted Media/Lost File Recovery’ option of the tool to recover the lost data. The software worked well with formatted drives instead. It listed all files previously stored on the USB in the interface. The files were saved successfully to the selected destination.

Search Lost/Deleted Volumes

Lastly, I decided to experiment on the ‘Search Lost/Deleted Volumes’ routine. I created another partition on my 250 GB drive using Disk Utility, copied some files to this partition, and then deleted the partition. The results received after running ‘Search Lost/Deleted Volumes’ routine were as expected. The software was able to quickly locate the deleted partition and recover all the files stored on it.

The software ideally recovers lost, deleted data in three steps:

Step 1

Run the software > Select the volume or drive > Choose the appropriate recovery algorithm

Step 2

The software scans the selected volume or drive > All the recoverable files and folders are listed for preview

Step 3

Choose the files and folders from the list > Choose the destination > Finally, Save

Other Impressive Options

Quick Look

The software allows previewing files in the interface after scanning by doing a simple right-click For this, select the desired file, right-click the selected file, and choose ‘Quick Look’. You can also recover individual files by choosing ‘Recover’ option on right-click.

Dynamic Preview of Photos/Text files

The software shows dynamic preview of photos and text files during the scan to allow instantaneous verification of the results. You may choose to enable or disable this feature through ‘Preferences’.

Ability to Scan High-Capacity Drives (Upto 4 TB)

The software can easily perform recovery from high-capacity drives upto 4 TB storage capacity. This feature makes it ready for enterprise-class drives that are typically used for big data storage.

On-the-fly Media Detection

With the ability to detect removable media on-the-fly, the software can be used to perform recovery from a range of removable devices without the need to rerun the software each time.

Pricing

Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery V5 is available in two licenses ‘SOHO’ and ”Technician’. The product can be bought at a starting price of $99.

Bottom Line

The software is easy to use with advanced features that do well in most of the situations. Besides a few limitations (recovering deleted files through ‘Quick Recovery’ scan), the software scores well over other products. But you should not be overly dependent on this one, as it does not guarantee 100% recovery every time.

Search Lost/Deleted Volumes

The three-step recovery procedure is easy for any naive user to quickly gain hands-on experience with the tool. Scanning is much faster even on larger drives, making the software superior to other competent tools in the market.

Cons

Needs to be given a second thought on the cost. Some modules may disappoint in a few cases. You may need to quickly jump to the advanced scanning options for doing the most simple recoveries.
